Call for papers and workshop announcement

January 19th, 2010 · 1 Comment

The Hans Rausing Endangered Language Programme at the School of Oriental and African Studies is holding a one-day international workshop on Saturday 27 February 2010, 9.30am - 6.00pm.

The goal of the workshop is to explore the sustainability of endangered languages, and sustainability of research (in both theory and practice). The keynote speaker is Lenore Grenoble from the University of Chicago.

The call for papers has been extended until the end of January. We would particularly welcome interdisciplinary papers, so please feel free to circulate this to colleagues.

Issues to be discussed could include:

  1. how communities can sustain languages and linguistic ecologies
  2. links between language maintenance and sustainable human development
  3. preservation of traditional knowledge and indigenous paradigms of teaching, learning, and research
  4. making the outcomes of our research sustainable
  5. whether sustaining languages and knowledge is something that researchers can contribute to, or is solely the responsibility of communities and speakers

Abstracts will be peer reviewed and should be a maximum of 300 words (not including any references) and should be sent to: elap@soas.ac.uk. For more details, and a registration form, see here. The workshop is one of the events for Endangered Languages Week 2010.

With many thanks

Julia Sallabank Research Fellow in Language Support and Revitalisation, Endangered Languages Academic Programme, Department of Linguistics, School of Oriental and African Studies, Thornhaugh Street London WC1H 0XG UK
