In any earlier post, I mentioned the importance for fieldworkers (and everyone really) to have backup software. Although I leave it to the tech experts to compare the variety of different resources which exist, I throw my two cents in for Mozy. This software will backup and encrypt 2GB for free (or an unlimited amount for MozyPro members, necessary for those heavy audio recordings). All it takes is a simple download and in two minutes you can select the files you want backed up and schedule an ideal time for your computer to perform the encrypted back-up.
For those of us who bring our data to precarious parts of the world, an external drive may not be enough. After all, they are easily lost, stolen, or broken. Although I carry an external drive in a pelican case, if my laptop and drive both broke or were stolen, I’d be in serious trouble. With Mozy I can relax knowing that all those recordings, photos, metadata, and notes can be recovered hassle-free. It’s worth checking out the free version and upgrading if you like it.
