While I was last in Moquegua my good friend Gustavo Valcarcel Salas gave me a faded xeroxed handmade book comprised of a series of poorly photocopied sheets folded in half. The work is entitled, Moquegua, La tierra del sol - Concerte es quererte: Folklore y turismo zona Ticsani Region Moquegua. It is unclear who wrote and compiled this document. On the second page there is a clue, but no name:
The content of this book is pretty diverse and covers a range of topics. There are stories, etymologies, and comments on life in this part of the Andes. There are also lots of pictures of unnamed people in traditional garb:
Over the course of the next few weeks, I will continue to post extracts from this work onto this site. It must have taken a long time to create this document and the author, whoever he was, probably did this on his own accord without any financial incentive. By posting extracts here, I hope to bring this project to a wider audience.
